God's eventually commanded Jacob to go back to the land of his father and his relatives, followed by a promise that God would be with Jacob. In the face of great fear, Jacob repeated God's promise back. Not to remind God...God never forgot. Rather, to remind himself. We can do the same thing in every fearful and sticky situation.
